                Department of  Internal Medicine in Thanjavur Medical College was started in 1964 for    M.B.B.S.,It is functioning in the  Thanjavur Medical College and Hospital, Thanjavur M.D.,Postgraduate  (General Medicine )was started on 1975.
            There are six Medical Units and one Intensive Medical Care Unit.
            Infectious disease ward is also functioning in our hospital with 30 beds. A separate H1 N1 ward is also taken care by Medicine department.
            Hypertension/Geriatric O.P./Haemophilia O.P. are looked after by Medicine department.
            ART Center is under control of the Professor & H.O.D. of  Department of Medicine as Nodal Officer.
            Department  of Medicine offers services  to 500 outpatients and 180 inpatients daily.

 Postgraduate student submit a  journal to e journal  at the end of 3rd year. Students submit a Dissertation book – 4 copies before the examination to the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai for evaluation and approval.
Dissertation and log book is reviewed during P.G. clinical examination.

Daily clinical classes and theory classes for Undergraduates and Postgraduates are conducted. Weekly Physicians Conference and Journal club conducted on every Thursday at 12.00 Noon. (Journal discussion and Interesting case discussion.) Monthly P.G’s Symposium and CRRI’s  Symposium are organized.  Periodically Speakers from outside are called to our institution to give lecture.
Research     : 6 Research articles are published in National journals.

Student information:
Every student must earn 90 % attendance to appear for the University examination.
Three Internal Assessment Theory and One Clinical Assessment examination are conducted every year for Final MBBS.
Four Internal Assessment Theory examination is conducted for Final M.D., (General Medicine) students every year.  Final Year  Postgraduate students take part in
Prof. Muthusethupathy Gold Medal Examination in Nephrology and Eastern Gate Academy of Cardiology, Gold Medal Examination Ever year.
