DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY
 
 SHORT HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:
             The Department of Psychiatry had been functioning at Government Raja Mirasudar Hospital, Thanjavur since 1963 with both inpatient and out patient facilities. It was shifted to Thanjavur Medical College hospital on 01-04-2011 as per the order of the Medical Superintendent, Government Raja Mirasudar Hospital, Thanjavur(RC:7778/08 dated 01/04/2011)
            The Department has been functioning with one professor , one assistant professor and two senior residents. The postgraduate diploma course in Psychiatry (D.P.M.-Diploma in Psychological Medicine ) was started in 1983 with an annual intake of two students. The postgraduates Degree course (M.D. Psychiatry ) was started in 2008 with an annual intake of two students. The first batch of M.D.( Psychiatry) has passed in may 2011 in the absence of MCI inspection.
            At present, there are six M.D. students and four D.P.M. students undergoing postgraduate training in our Department though the teaching faculty remains the same. 

ACTIVITIES AND PERFORMANCE OF THE DEPARTMENTS:
                   Our  department caters the need of 5-6 districts around Thanjavur. Daily 300 to 400 patients are attending Psychiatry OPD .At any given time, we have 35-45 patients getting inpatient treatment in  a separate psychiatry ward(statistics from 01.01.2011 to 28.11.2011 attached). Apart from treatment facilities available in our department, we have liaison psychiatry service with other department like Medicine , Neurology etc. Our psychiatrists are  attending camps  throughout the year, organized by the District Disability and Rehabilitation officer and the district Collector.Apart from teaching our own postgraduate students, as part of teaching schedule, postgraduate students from the department of Medicine and Pediatrics  are also trained in our department. Nursing students from our college aswell as private nursing colleges (permitted by the Government ) are also given the required psychiatric training by our department.  Above all, Our department is the nodal centre for giving training to medical officers working in Nagapatinam and Thanjavur districts under National Mental health programme. So far we have training for 10 batches of medical officers from both districts. The training for the last batch of medical officer was held during August 2011.Presently our outpatient department is functioning in the new OPD building of Thanjavur Medical college Hospital. Under National Health Programme a separate psychiatry  block at the cost of 48 lakh rupee has been constructed.
