The Department of Psychiatry had been functioning at Government Raja Mirasudar Hospital, Thanjavur since 1963 with both inpatient and out patient facilities. It was shifted to Thanjavur Medical College hospital on 01-04-2011 as per the order of the Medical Superintendent, Government Raja Mirasudar Hospital, Thanjavur (RC:7778/08 dated 01/04/2011)
            The Department has been functioning with 1 Professor, 1 Associate Professor, 2 Assistant Professors, 2 Senior Residents and 1 Assistant professor of Psychology cum Clinical Psychologist. The postgraduate diploma course in Psychiatry (D.P.M.-Diploma in Psychological Medicine) was started in the year 1983 with an annual intake of two students. DPM was recognized by MCI in the year 2003. (Reference: MCI Lr.No.262(22)2003/MED/5792 Dated 16 May 2003)
The postgraduates Degree course (M.D. Psychiatry) was started in 2008 with an annual intake of two students. The first batch of M.D.(
Psychiatry) had come out in May 2011& MCI had given recognition for 2 MD seats on 17.09.2012

            From the Academic year 2019-2020, 2 DPM seats were converted to 2 MD Psychiatry seats. Since then 4 M.D. Psychiatry students are undergoing postgraduate courses in our Department. 
Apart from teaching our own postgraduate students, as part of teaching schedule, postgraduate students from the allied departments like Medicine are also trained in our department. Nursing students from our college as well as from private nursing colleges permitted by the Director of Medical Education are also given the required psychiatric training by our department.  Our department is the nodal centre for giving training to medical officers working in Pudukkottai and Thanjavur districts under National Mental health Programme.
                   Our department caters the need of 5-6 districts around Thanjavur. Daily 200 to 250 patients are attending Psychiatry OPD. At any given time, we have 20-30 patients getting inpatient treatment in  a separate psychiatry male and female ward with a total bed strength of 30 beds and the bed occupancy rate is about 95% on a given day.
In addition to that we have a separate Behavioral Sciences ward with a bed strength of 5 beds which is exclusively for Juvenile Offenders who are referred through Juvenile Justice Board of 7 districts like Thanjavur, Trichy, Tiruvarur, Nagai, Ariyalur, Perambalur & Pudukkottai.
We conduct Special Clinics on the following days:

Wednesday     –  De addiction Clinic
Thursday          –  Neurosis Clinic
Friday               –  Geriatric Clinic
Saturday           –  Memory Clinic
The modes of treatment we provide are pharmacological, psychological as well as physical methods. Modified Electro convulsive Therapy has been given to certain patients who require rapid improvement of symptoms.   Apart from treatment facilities available in our department, we have liaison psychiatry service with other departments like Medicine, Surgery, Neurology, Neuro Surgery Orthopedics, Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynecology etc.
We also provide De addiction Treatment to the deserving patients with Substance Use Disorders.
Medico legal cases referred through Courts of Thanjavur and other districts are also admitted in Psychiatry ward for evaluation & certification of their Mental Status. Our faculty members attend Courts in such cases and give their expert witnesses.
As per Mental Health Care Act 2017, Wandering Mentally ill persons who were in custody of Police Officer in charge of their jurisdiction are referred through District Magistrate and get admitted in Psychiatry ward, clinically evaluated and certified for favor of admission in Institute of Mental Health, Chennai for long term treatment. 
We also do Mental Status Examination, IQ assessment & Disabilty assessment of those referred through Regional Medical Board, Thanjavur Medical College Hospital for want of certification for various purposes by Medical Board.
In our Department, we do IQ Assessments, Personality Assessment, & Other psychological assessments by using various test batteries which are done by our Clinical Psychologist.
Our psychiatrists attend camps organized by the District Collector & District Disability and Rehabilitation officer in Thanjavur Collector Office on every Monday during Peoples Grievances day. So far we have training for 10 batches of medical officers from both districts.
Public Awareness Programmes are conducted in our hospital premises on World Schizophrenia Day (May 24), No Tobacco Day (31 May), International day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (June26)   World Mental Health Day (October 10)  of every year.
